Benefits - Power Generation
Plasma Gasification has many benefits when wanting to use non gaseous fuels for power generation. Examples of the benefits are as follows:
- Emissions to air are equal to those from natural gas fired facilities. As plasma converted gas is of similar quality to natural gas, emission profiles are similar. Even when a very dirty fuel like Orimulsion is fed into the system the emissions profile is still the same. The exact emissions profile depends on the burner system used, so the better the system, the better the profile.
- As any carbon based substance fed to a plasma gasifier will be converted to plasma converted gas, so any carbon based substance can be used as fuel. This offers immense fuel and operational flexibility to anybody using plasma gasification. One week coal could be used as the fuel, another week heavy fuel oil. Any type of biomass can also be fed to a plasma gasifier as fuel. This offering the opportunity to meet renewable energy targets easily and without modification to complicated systems.
- As plasma converted gas can be combusted in gas turbines, higher conversion efficiencies can be achieved. Although the conversion efficiency can not meet that of a combined cycle plant, because power has to be fed back to the gasifier, conversion efficiency will normally be greater than for a utility boiler system.
